Reading or watching the news can feel daunting. There’s a lot out there that needs our help—as thinkers, Christians, and healers. People are yearning for answers to things that can’t happen overnight, or be fixed by governments or laws. Often what’s needed is a change in thought—a radical shift in our outlook. Where can you begin? How do we start to help shift the tide?

#1 Start in prayer

For me it always starts in thought — even just the way I think. If some place — near or far — needs help I’ve realized that adjusting my thought about the events going on there can, at the very least, be of some help. To do so I can immediately help by starting in prayer. Lifting my thought up to God and knowing God’s infinite and eternal goodness is even filling all-space is a powerful fact. By doing so we’re acknowledging that God, divine intelligence, is there — helping those in need and shifting thought where it needs adjustment.

…except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
—I Corinthians 7:5

#2 Gain empathy for those in need

When seeing what’s happening on the news, it can be tempting to think that it’s out of our control and that there’s nothing we can do. However, mentally taking a stand for good and knowing that God’s love is present in every heart and mind (because God is the divine Mind), helps us gain empathy for those facing a social struggle. We can see through their eyes the needs that they may be facing, and we can know that because God is infinite God has the power to supply the demand for righteous activity, and that God created the demand for supplying righteousness.

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
—Mark 6:34

#3 Take action that heals

Sometimes it feels impossible to sit still and watch social injustice take place. Sometimes this inspires us to take action as a next step. When the desire to rise up and help comes to mind, listen for steps that lead toward humility, healing, and lifting others up. Listening for the right steps, having the humility to help, and being willing to help others may not always be a quick. But By taking these kinds of steps toward helping, we avoid the misguided means of good intent. Good intent may seem helpful, but if there isn’t humble and moral integrity helping it stand up, it can fall down in the wrong direction and hurt ourselves and others.

However, when we take a stand for healing, we can rest assured we won’t be duped into taking action that might be part good and part bad. Healing, as Jesus demonstrated it, was the highest form of social and spiritual activism. Healing only heals when we seek to help others through divine Love.

The exercise of will brings on a hypnotic state, detrimental to health and integrity of thought. This must therefore be watched and guarded against. Covering iniquity will prevent prosperity and the ultimate triumph of any cause.
