This election in the United States of America, for the new president, has shown an unprecedented mire of hate coming to the surface — not just between the candidates; there seems to be much voter disdain, as well. Regardless of which side you support, as Christians and Christian Scientists, we’re commanded by Christ Jesus to “watch” and to stop hate. Does this mean we need to evangelize others? No. Rather we start with prayer — and we humbly start with ourselves.

And it’s not just about this election. Hate is getting uncovered in many ways. For instance, the new documentary “13th” released by Netflix uncovers a history of systemic, racial targeting leading to slavery, old and new, in the United States. The good news — the way I see it — God, Truth, is aiding mankind to be more truthful, and loving. What’s more, God is teaching us how to do so through the redeeming power of His healing love since divine Truth, God, is also divine Love.

Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”
Mark 13:33-37 (NIV)

Christian Science commands man to master the propensities, — to hold hatred in abeyance with kindness, to conquer lust with chastity, revenge with charity, and to overcome deceit with honesty. Choke these errors in their early stages, if you would not cherish an army of conspirators against health, happiness, and success.

Evangelize thought — through God’s love

Regardless of the outcome of this election, being on guard for our communities, homes, and our own thinking will be greatly needed. The big question is how do we do that? We simply start with God, divine Love, and Her all-power. In order to “stop hate”, the only truly effective way is through God’s infinite redeeming love. And hate is not some big evil power! Christian Science has declared what the Bible shows us again and again: the nothingness and powerlessness of every form of evil — sin, fear, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, racism, bigotry, error, false prophets, lies, etc. No matter what the evil, it really is powerless against God’s goodness. We know this because Jesus proved that what underlies all of reality is the total unity of good — there really is no evil and there is no hate because God, Love, is All-in-all.

With this spiritual fact at hand, God’s love and power helps us purify our own thinking so that we can help others. We can’t stop hate if we’re hating. We can’t love if we’re unloving. And we can’t heal if we’re not making an effort to walk in the consistently loving footsteps of the Master healer, Christ Jesus.

But the good news is, God’s love empowers, helps, and redeems all of us — even the sinner— and releases us from the bondage of our mistakes and false notions. We can start by being willing to love our neighbors, in town or across the world, more deeply. We can honor everyone’s God-given identity and what God  knows is true about each of us: that we’re good, holy, and pure. Right now we can bear witness to the fact that God made each one of his children — regardless of regardless of what anyone’s current state of mind seems to be — to fulfill their God-given calling to express God’s pure love.

For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:2-5 (NKJV)

Be what you already are: Love’s action

As the children of God we’re made in the image and likeness of God alone. We have dominion over hate, fears, and doctrines, — as well as the beliefs of inheritance: DNA and genes. What does this mean? We’re not locked down by the past — about our family, country, opinions, news-cycles, angry political partisanship, etc. — any beliefs of  materiality. Rather we’re shaped by divine Love itself; we are Love’s shining light that extinguishes darkness and fear. This power is God’s power; and it actually is the only power that animates and governs our affections, choices, and activity. The fact that Love has bestowed dominion upon you means that nothing can stop you from being Love’s righteous and wholly good expression as you consciously embrace these spiritual facts.

All of God’s infinite power and love is what supports each one of us! We can’t help but be good since we are actually the assertion of good itself— Love’s action. Love, including all of its good qualities, is our actual source of identification, desires, decisions, and expression. And divine Love is the source of our spiritual make up: our constitution and design. This means we’re all the design of Love, and each of us is Love’s perfect architecture — established to be Love’s perfect action, Love’s goodness, Love’s healing light in the world. Simply understanding this a little bit, we take part in a revolution that not only stops hate — but destroys it.

At present mortals progress slowly for fear of being thought ridiculous. They are slaves to fashion, pride, and sense. Sometime we shall learn how Spirit, the great architect, has created men and women in Science. We ought to weary of the fleeting and false and to cherish nothing which hinders our highest selfhood.
